Description
The Asian Liver Center at Stanford University is the first non-profit organization in the United States that addresses the high prevalence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in Asians and Asian Americans. Founded in 1996, the Asian Liver Center uses a four-pronged approach—Collaboration, Advocacy, Research, and Education—to eliminate hepatitis B and reduce liver cancer disparities.
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated interns with a strong interest in research and data science to join ongoing projects at the Asian Liver Center. These projects aim to:
(1) Evaluate temporal trends in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence and mortality in the United States, with a focus on disparities across demographic groups and geographic regions;
(2) Assess the cost-effectiveness of expanding hepatitis B antiviral treatment to reduce the future burden of hepatitis B–related HCC and hepatitis B–related mortality.
This is an excellent opportunity for college students to enhance their skills in data analytics, academic figure preparation, manuscript writing, and publication experience.
Responsibilities:
· Conduct literature and data source searches to support manuscript development
· Verify and cross-check data used in academic manuscripts
· Assist with the preparation and refinement of figures and visual materials for publications and presentations
· Help organize and maintain documentation related to manuscript submission and revision
· Prepare materials for data access applications and assist with related documentation
· Assist with the planning the Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) HOME | Youth Leadership Con
Requirements:
· Strong interest in academic research, particularly in liver disease and public health
· Basic knowledge of epidemiology, data analysis, visualization, and interpretation
· Ability to read, understand, and summarize academic literature
· Responsible, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
· Strong execution skills and responsiveness to feedback in a fast-paced research environment
Bonus points:
· Proficiency in at least one data analytic tool (e.g., Stata, R, SAS, Python)
· Skills in data visualization or scientific figure preparation
· Pursuing a degree in public health, data science, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative field
· Currently residing in or familiar with the Bay Area
Time line:
· Academic Year (Part-time; mid-September to next June)
· Outstanding interns may be invited to continue next Summer (Full-time; mid-June to mid-August)
