Prior to bringing your computer up on the network you will need to read the following information to familiarize yourself with SEASnet’s computer security requirements. If you do not understand these instructions, please ask a SEASnet staff member for clarification.
If you need assistance securing your system and/or maintaining security, please talk with a SEASnet staff member about your options.
Unsecure computer systems pose a threat to other systems on the internet and jeopardize both data and the ability of people to work or conduct business within and beyond UCLA. Failure to take decisive steps in limiting a systems ability to infect other systems exposes our School and University to criticism, to network isolation from key networks, and to possible legal action. Did you know if you maintain a system that is compromised and that system contains personal data (e.g. Social Security or credit card numbers, etc.) you will be required to follow UCLA Policy 420 to avoid violating California State Law?
See details here:
http://www.adminpolicies.ucla.edu/app/Default.aspx?&id=420
After bringing your computer up on the network you must ensure your system has the latest security patches installed. If your machine has to be blocked from the network by SEASnet staff due to your failure to follow these instructions, SEASnet will charge you for the staff time necessary for determining the source of the problem, isolating and blocking the source from the network to prevent its further spread, and providing guidance with cleanup at SEASnet's approved labor rate.
SEASnet’s security settings are here:
http://www.seasnet.ucla.edu/network/security/securing-your-computer
SEASnet requires you install virus scanning software and schedule the software to update the virus definition files on a regular basis. Sophos is UCLA's preferred virus scanning software, and UCLA offers it at no cost to faculty, staff and students for all OS platforms.
See the following website for additional information:
http://www.seasnet.ucla.edu/network/security/computer-virus-info
As stated above, if you do not understand these instructions, please ask a SEASnet staff member for clarification. If you need assistance securing your system and/or maintaining security, please talk with a SEASnet staff member about your options.
WARNING: SEASnet will reclaim IP addresses that have not been on the network for 6 MONTHS or more without any further written or verbal notification.
