Talking to Professionals on the Phone
1. Relax. Remember that the person you are about to call is just another person who you want to talk to about potentially giving them something they want, more recruits!
2. Call. A big first step is dialing the number and pressing the call button, after that you're already farther than most people get!
a) During the Call, Be cordial, polite and above all, personable! Talk to the recruiter in the same way you would talk to an adult friend, always show respect for them, but don't be too intimidated, after all, they probably want what you are asking them about.
b) Introduce yourself, with your name, affiliation within UCLA (ie. AIChE External Affairs), and the purpose of your call.
EX) "Hello, My name is Hubert Heberterson and I am involved in the external affairs of UCLA's chapter of AIChE. I'm calling to ask/invite your company to an on-campus event(career fair/mockinterviewnight/have an infosession). Is there someone I might be able to talk with about getting your company involved in this event? (especially important if you are calling the company's generic switchboard number, usually a receptionist) Then just explain any details, answer questions, find out more about the company, maybe insert a joke or light-hearted pun here or there, and you're well on your way!
Some Advice: you can always practice on an industry that you have no intention of getting involved with, say, investment banks.. They are intimidating and probably ask extremely tough questions, but it is very helpful for improving your skills of communicating over the phone.
