ASSESSMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES

 

In normal Baby, development is a continuous process involving Vision, Hearing, Motor control & function & Social & Emotional Responses.

                       

SEQUENCE OF DEVELOPMENT

           

FIRST – 12 WEEKS

 

§  POSTURE & LARGE MOVTS

Ø  Development of head control in prone & sitting

Ø  Neck ext develops & Arms begin to support the body

§  VISION

Ø  Visually very Alert

Ø  Ability to fix & fallow a dangling ball from face horizontally & vertically

§  HEARING & SPEECH

Ø  Awareness develop to meaningful sounds

Ø  Vocalizes

§  SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Ø  Developing awareness & responding to daily routines

Ø  Enjoys bathing, feeding & being handled

 

12 – 28 WEEKS

 

§  POSTURE & LARGE MOVTS

Ø  Development of trunk Balance              

Ø  Gradual loss of Lumbar curve

Ø  Arms stronger lifting shoulder off the couch

Ø  Forward /backward parachute reaction

        

By 24 weeks rolling over develops.

The baby enjoys kicking his legs & being held in standing (bounce up & down).

 

§  VISION

Ø  Awareness of environment increases  

Ø  Moves head around to watch

 

§  MANIPULATION: - Uses whole hand to grasp (holding an object)

 

§  HEARING & SPEECH

Ø  Responds to baby hearing test   

Ø  Vocalization increases, screams & laughs aloud

 

§  SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Ø  Develops complex interactions             

Ø  Takes objects to mouth    

 

Eg: Reaches out readily for rattle & shakes.

 

         By 28 weeks beginning to be “wary of stranger”.

 

28 – 52 WEEKS

 

§  POSTURE & LARGE MOVTS

Ø  Sitting without support   

Ø  Rotation around sitting base develops

Ø  Crawling is initiated        

Ø  Bear walking          

Ø  Standing alone

 

§  VISION

Ø  Visual ability develops rapidly & is able to watch activities at 10-12 feet.

 

§  MANIPULATION

Ø  Starts to pick up objects   

Ø  Pointing with Index finger

 

§  HEARING & SPEECH

Ø  Localizes baby hearing test at 3 feet level      

Ø  Imitates sounds

Ø  Tuneful babble (dada conversational sounds)

 

§  SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Ø  Likes to be within sight of familiar adult

Ø  Begins to put cubes in to box

Ø  Will give toy to an adult on request

Ø  Drinks from a cup
