Imam Hussein (Alayhi Al-Salam): Patience, Courage, Perseverance, and Integrity
by Amer A. AL-Zubaidi
A brother from Virginia, Dr. Reginald Shareef, who is an honorary member of KCIK and university professor, wrote, “I really like your letter and you cite powerful historical leaders who have shown how non-violence can lead to victory. Even the Prophet's (PBUH) return to Mecca--where he forgave those who persecuted him - - is a sign from Allah (SWT) of mercy and non-violence. Sadly, many people in power--both Muslims and Non-Muslims--have taken ‘their passions as their Lord’ and their passion is for war and destruction. The Qur’an says, “Woe to those who ignore Allah’s signs,” and that is the time we live in, and until man changes his soul (nafsنفس,) we will have war and oppression. Millions of innocent people were harmed and killed because of this passion for power and violence by both the Muslims and Non-Muslims alike.
Often, throughout history, people who have pursued their warlike tendencies have had to become exhausted from fighting before believing in non-violence as the way to peace and security. That is, the costs simply become too high to continue fighting or the people simply say enough. I believe the world community is moving in that direction, but power is an intoxicant and the leaders are drunk, so it will probably be a future time before peace and non-violence replace the violent paradigm that is currently dominant.”
