استخدم المسلمون التقويم الهجري إشارة إلى الهجرة النبوية المباركة من مكة المكرمة إلى المدينة المنورة عام 622 م.
.Muslims chose Muharram Al-Haram (شهر محرم الحرام) to be the first month of the Hijrah Year (الهـجـري التاريخ) after the demise of Nabiy Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Waalihi Wasalam) although this month does not coincide with his migration from Makkah to Madinah in the fall of 622 AD (المـيـلادي التاريخ).
