[1] We put it out at the sidewalk curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
[2] Garbage collectors come into the garage to collect the bin.
[3] Where there is a Statutory or Civic Holiday, the City may delay collection one day. (Check your newspaper or the City website).
[4] During Covid-19, the City asks us to stagger leaf and yard waste material by not setting out more than 2-3 bags per week.
Brown Bins - Garbage
139 Guigues receives multi-residential containerized garbage and containerized recycling collection. We must put the bins out at the sidewalk curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day.
• All garbage goes in the communal Brown Bins near the garage door.
• The City of Ottawa Garbage Calendar sets out the collection days for large items such as furniture or mattresses and yard waste. Contact the City at 613-580-2400 or visit their website at https://ottawa.ca/en/garbage-and-recycling
• Should items not be picked up by 6 p.m. on collection day, submit an online request directly to the City or contact 311.
• Tie garbage bags so liquids don’t pour into the communal Brown Bins and create undesirable smells.
• We must bring garbage bins in as soon as possible after pick-up.
• Please clean up promptly if trash is scattered by animals.
• Garbage may not be stored on decks or at the garage door.
The city collectors come into the garage to collect the Green Bins every week. Regular users of a Green Bin report significant reductions in the amount of garbage. Purchasing items with a less packaging also reduces garbage.
We encourage you to use the Green Bin but, to prevent it from becoming heavily soiled, never dump food waste directly into it. Please use a smaller bag for your waste.
You can reuse common plastic bags (e.g., bread bags, milk bags and grocery and retail bags) as a bag option for household organics in the Green Bin. Pet waste is accepted, including dog waste and kitty litter.
Lock the lid to reduce odor in the garage and prevent animals and pests from getting into the bin.
Leaf and yard waste can be used to top up the Green Bin. It can also be placed in a separate container, provided collection workers see the leaf and yard waste.
Leaf Yard and Waste
Leaf and yard waste can be placed in a separate container, provided collection workers can see the leaf and yard waste at the top of the bag.
The city collectors come into the garage to collect the recycling bins every week.
Only put the materials listed on top of the bins into the bins. The Ottawa City Recycling web page lists things that DO NOT go in the recycling and should be put in either the Green Bin or garbage. Not sure where an item goes? Visit the Waste Explorer website to find out. “Covid-19” gloves and masks are garbage.
We have two large recycling bins in the back wall of the garage. The Blue Bin is for recyclable plastic, metal and glass materials. Garbage collectors come into the garage to collect the bin. DO NOT PUT PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING. If the operators of the recycling trucks see plastic bags in the bin, they will not empty it.
We have two large recycling bins in the back wall of the garage. The Grey Bin is for recyclable cardboard/paper.
If your pizza boxes contain ANY pizza drippings, they do not go in the Grey Bin; they can be broken down and put in green bins or in regular garbage bins.
Collapse and secure boxes and cartons with string and leave inside the large, recycle Grey Bin container. Always break down your cardboard to be as thin as possible to maximize the amount of paper and cardboard we can get into our one bin. You must get your cardboard “inside the blue bin” because the city won't take away any cardboard recycling in our garage that isn't broken down and “inside the blue bin”. The city will not break down your boxes.
If the blue bin is full to the top when you bring your stuff, don't simply lay it down beside the bin on the garage floor; that mess will never be moved. One option is to put your cardboard on the street, together with our neighbor’s cardboard, but this is tricky because our neighbors blue bin curbside pickup alternates on Wednesday every week (one week cardboard paper, the next week glass). Your other option is to hold on to your cardboard until after our bin is emptied by the city.
Material left beside the container will not be taken away. When your deliveries involve bulk packaging materials and/ or unpacking, arrange for the delivery person to remove materials.
If the City’s recycling service fails to empty our recycling bins materials, a member of the Board or Building Manager needs to call 311 for action. They have up to 2 business days to respond to the call. Unfortunately, the City refuses to take a work order from an owner.
