Sherry Yerby did not wait long before she began to exhibit signs of natural creativity. Early in elementary school-second grade, to be exact-she entered her first art competition, a coloring contest, and won first place. Sherry continued to practice her art throughout her school years. Later, when she was in the eleventh grade, she enrolled in her first painting class. Fueled with ambition and equipped with new art supplies provided by her brother, she painted her first picture, which was a scene for her church's baptistry.
Sherry attended Judson College in 1975 and enrolled in a drawing class there; her poems and her artwork were recognized and published in the college's art magazine! Upon completion of her studies, she returned to Lamar County to work as a Juvenile Probation officer. In the meantime, she married, had two children, and eventually traded that job for one with the Department of Human Resources as the food stamp supervisor where she remained until her retirement in 2005.
Since this busy artist's retirement, Sherry has been able to dedicate more time to "yard art", repurposing furniture and other items, and transferring her painting skills to the canvas. Recently, she stretched her muscles and signed up for a pottery class under the tutelage of Ron Morris at Ron's Pottery located in historic downtown Fayette. Who knows what her next step will be?
