Scott Gravlee, our featured artist and a member of the Sipsey Arts Alliance, is an Alabama-based filmmaker and photographer. Scott’s early interest in the world of visual art was first piqued when he was in a Fayette County High School video production class and was given a video making assignment. His natural ease and ability in this task led him to branch out and also embrace photography as well.
This innovative young man has undertaken both video and photography, both of which have included titles for city governments, for musicians, for local/regional events, political candidacy, university promotions, advertising agent work, and nonprofit organizations’ public relations. His unique style has been evident in his photography which dones the walls of art galleries and museums, newspapers, magazines, and other printed materials showcase his prowess.
Scott incorporates a hybrid of both film and digital modes which range from landscapes to concerts/festivals and anything in between!
Scott shares some valuable and sage advice to budding photographers: Expensive or complicated gear isn’t paramount to successful shooting; great results can come with the most basic gear, even just a smartphone camera. One has to have a “good eye” for what’s unusual. In addition, he adds, a strong background knowledge of filmmaking rules is essential for a deeper understanding of techniques.
Scott is currently working on a documentary that chronicles the production of hot sauce (Alabama Sunshine) in Fayette. Also, he is in production of a series of 35mm film photographs depicting scenes from Washington, DC. Scott’s most recent renderings can be viewed on instagram @scottgravlee.
