Main College Building (MCB)
The Main College Building, commonly referred to as MCB, was the first official Simmons Building and opened in 1904. Several famous people who have spoken at Simmons have stood on these stairs to take pictures, including Gloria Steinem. John Simmons, one of the wealthiest men in Boston in the mid-1800s, founded the college so that it would provide a space for women to earn independent livelihoods without relying on men or their families to lead meaningful lives. He wanted to give women the chance to pursue a well-rounded course of study in the arts and sciences while integrating professional preparation.
