There are two libraries in the middle school complex that are fully functioning learning centers that serve tri-building faculty and students. Each library provides a varied collection in a wide range of media. This includes a combination of electronic and print resources that are accessible to staff and students.
Students use the libraries for completing assignments, recreational and academic reading, and conducting research.
An online computer catalog links all Shenendehowa school library collections together with a number of other schools in the Capital District. Via the interlibrary loan system, it is possible to borrow materials from all participating libraries in Capital Region BOCES.
The Shen MS libraries are available to students most school days both before and after school. Students may also attend to library needs during flex, scheduled study halls, or as a class activity. Each year, all students receive some level of orientation to library services and function. During these sessions, the librarians provide instruction in library access, catalog use and rules and expectations. The librarians and the teacher using the library for library-related instruction work closely to provide a most effective and efficient experience for that aspect of the curriculum being explored, whether it be curriculum-related research or literacy enrichment.
The libraries also play an important role in the improvement of the educational experience beyond the classroom. The librarians host and/or arrange such activities as book fairs, author visits, reading contests and book discussions.
