Course Description
All Grade 6 students are required to take this course. Supporting the transition to Middle School involves ensuring a smooth shift for students entering 6th grade by promoting social integration, comfort, resilience, and confidence. The course on Mind & Body Wellness: Building Health Literacy aims to educate students on mental health, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking behaviors, and promote life skills development. Additionally, promoting social, emotional, and behavioral learning enhances school climate, interpersonal relationships, and mental health outcomes by focusing on self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, social awareness, and self-awareness.
8th Grade Health Education: Cultivating Lifelong Wellness
20 week program, meets two out of three days on an A/B/C rotation
Course Description
This required, semester-long course is designed to empower all 8th-grade students with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for achieving and maintaining overall well-being. The curriculum is grounded in developing seven core, health-enhancing skills that promote a balanced and fulfilling life:
Self-Management
Relationship Management
Communication
Decision Making
Planning & Goal Setting
Stress Management
Advocacy
Course content focuses on knowledge critical for lifelong health, exploring the physical, mental, and social dimensions of wellness through key areas:
Physical Activity and Nutrition--diverse approaches to healthy movement and eating
Substance Use and Prevention--examining tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, including informed decision-making and harm-reduction strategies
Mental and Emotional Health--building empathy, resilience, positive psychology, and effective stress management, while encouraging students to seek and offer support for mental health challenges
Relationships, Sexual Health, and Family Life--covering healthy relationships, consent, sexual health, abstinence, and STIs with medically accurate, non-judgmental instruction
Safety and Injury Prevention--addressing violence prevention and providing instruction in immediate, life-saving response skills like the Chain of Survival
