Archaeological, linguistic, ethnobotonical, and genetic research has shown a deep connection between Taiwan and the Austronesian language family. However, due to changes over time, as well as modern political and historical shifts, Taiwan's ties with Pacific cultures have gradually faded. This project is named "Island DNA", symbolizing our aspiration to awaken and strengthen Taiwan’s connection as an island nation with maritime cultures. Here, DNA not only represents the genetic links between Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples and the Austronesian language family but also underscores the significance of Diversity, highlighting the importance of multicultural values in shaping a new Taiwanese identity. By understanding the wisdom of Austronesian cultures—where humans and nature are deeply interconnected—we can cultivate Novel innovative thinking necessary to address future global climate challenges. Furthermore, we aim to reclaim the Austronesian and Adventurous spirit demonstrated in their migrations, a spirit that can inspire collective action in facing today’s climate crisis and seeking sustainable solutions.
This project integrates interdisciplinary efforts across academia, professional sectors, communities, and Indigenous groups, combining education, culture, environment, and technology. The implementation process consists of four key steps: data collection, resource integration, design and development, and teacher training.
By employing a dual-track strategy that merges education and culture, the project aims to deepen Taiwanese society’s understanding of Austronesian culture, revitalize traditional navigation techniques and culture, cultivate internationally minded maritime talents and educators, and strengthen Taiwan’s Austronesian connections.
The ultimate goal of this project is to enhance five key aspects among the people of Taiwan (as illustrated below):
Foster awareness and identity with Austronesian culture.
Strengthen connections with other Pacific island nations, enhancing Taiwan’s international participation.
Highlight Taiwan’s island DNA through interdisciplinary integration and knowledge system development in education.
Take environmental protection initiatives related to oceans, rivers, forests, and the night sky.
Internalize the global sustainability philosophy of “One Ocean, One Family”, promoting the harmonious coexistence of humanity and the ocean.
Ocean Wayfinding Seed Teacher Empowerment Workshop
Friday, February 28, 2025 – Sunday, October 12, 2025
This workshop aims to cultivate seed teachers with a profound understanding of Austronesian culture, promote the sustainable concept of "One Ocean, One Family," and rebuild the deep connections between islands, humans, and the ocean. We will invite international star navigation masters to teach traditional navigation techniques, guiding seed teachers to interpret and apply natural signals, thereby enhancing their practical skills in natural navigation. Ultimately, seed teachers will internalize their learning and transform it into concrete educational actions to disseminate Austronesian navigation knowledge and culture, fostering the integration of traditional wisdom and modern education.
Workshop Overview
The workshop adopts a dual strategy of culture and technology to deepen seed teachers' understanding of Austronesian culture and cultivate globally-minded starry sky navigation education talents. International starry sky navigation masters from Polynesia will convey the core philosophy of "One Ocean, One Family," highlighting the close connections between Taiwan and other islands while reconstructing the profound relationship between humans and the ocean. Under the guidance of international masters, seed teachers will learn to observe local rhythms of the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, and seas, mastering celestial and ecological observation methods. They will gain a better sense of time and space, enhance natural navigation capabilities, and drive the modern application and transmission of traditional navigation techniques. Eventually, seed teachers will internalize their knowledge and transform it into concrete educational initiatives, promoting a fusion of traditional and modern navigation knowledge and deepening societal understanding of the ocean and Austronesian culture.
