The progression route to Chartered Town Planner status for those with fully accredited degrees is the Licentiate pathway.
For those with partially accredited degrees, if they don’t undertake a top-up qualification to get full accreditation, they would need to follow our Associate pathway to Chartered Town Planner status.
There’s also this diagram showing all the routes to Chartered Town Planner status.
RTPI - Licentiate membership is for graduates who have completed a fully RTPI accredited qualification. It is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Town Planner via the Licentiate Assessment of Professional Competence (L-APC).
RTPI - Associate membership is a partial professional qualification, awarded in recognition of achievement and demonstrable involvement in, or engagement with, particular areas of planning. Associate membership therefore indicates that you have achieved a certain level of knowledge and experience in your chosen planning field.
RTPI - Chartered Planners represent the gold standard of planning practice. They are recognised by employers, clients and members of the public for their skills, expertise and professional practice.
RTPI - Planner case studies "If you want to make a difference to the way your area looks and functions for its residents and visitors, then I would say that planning could be the career for you."
You can join the Town and Country Planning Association as a student for £10 per year, if this is of interest.
One of the benefits of membership of the Association is access to their current editions of the Journal. However regardless of if you are a member or not you can access the Journal Archive.
If you have any questions about membership David White, the TCPA membership’s officer, would be happy to help – either by email at david.white@tcpa.org.uk or on 020 3965 4380.
