Leave of Absence (LOA)

If a student wants to apply for a LOA their supervisor should be their first point of call. If the student is on a Tier 4/Student visa they need to follow the guidance on the self help tool (linked on the paperwork) or speak to International Student Support and Compliance (ISSAC).

For further information please see the page titled Leave of Absence in the Key Dates & PhD Progression section of this handbook

If the student states the reason they need an LOA is due to mental health issues this should be a Medical Leave of absence and needs evidence. This can be gained from UHS, their own GP/Psychiatrist, Student Mental Health Counselling and Therapy Services (SMHCTS) or from the Wellbeing Service. It is better if the student has already engaged with this service previously.

If you are concerned about a student's mental health please do get in touch with the PGR Student Support Officer for advice or get directly in touch with SMHCTS.

Through this form: Mental Health Guidance and Liaison Desk form for students and concerned others (google.com)

If a student decides to take a Medical LOA they need to be signed off as fit to return to their studies when their LOA is over.
