Health, Wellbeing & Support

There are a variety of health-related support services available to you, either via the university or local NHS providers. You can also visit the student online support hub which may answer some of your questions.

University Health Service (UHS)

While you are a student at the University you can register with the University Health Service. The University Health Service offers all the facilities that one would normally find in a GP practice but, as you might expect, the doctors and nurses who work there are particularly familiar with the types of medical problems encountered by students. NHS Walk-in Centre

Alternatively, you can make an appointment at the NHS Walk-in Centre. You don't need to be registered at the walk-in centre to be seen.

The opening hours are 8am–10pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Emergency or crisis support

If you or someone else is at immediate risk or need urgent medical attention (e.g. following an overdose or if actively suicidal), please call the emergency services (police or ambulance).

Northern General Hospital is a large site and difficult to navigate. A taxi should take you to the A&E entrance. If you don't have cash to pay for a taxi, you can use the Safe Taxi Scheme.

If you have experienced a Hate Crime or Discrimination, Bullying or Harassment or Sexual Harassment, Violence or Relationship abuse please consider making a disclosure to the University through Report + Support

Student Mental Health, Counselling and Therapies Service

If you’re a registered student, Student Mental Health, Counselling and Therapies Service is the first point of contact for you to seek support for your mental health. They offer a pre-triage questionnaire and then an initial triage appointment after which they will offer you counselling or therapy or will signpost you to the correct service for your needs.

There is sometimes a waiting list for SMHCTS. Whilst you are waiting please consider booking an appointment with the Wellbeing Advisor or getting in touch with the University Health Service.

Student Wellbeing Advisor for Engineering

Sessions are 40 minutes and can be conducted in person, by telephone or online through Google Meet or Blackboard Collaborate. All of our Wellbeing Advisors are experienced professionals in supporting your wellbeing needs. Book an appointment here.

Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS)

The Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) at the University of Sheffield is your main point of contact for any disability related queries throughout your studies.  

DDSS is responsible for recommending and coordinating your academic support or adjustments.  You will have a named Disability Adviser within DDSS and you need to have contact with them to discuss your individual requirements before any support can be put in place for you.  

You can have contact with DDSS before you arrive at university, to help ensure that support is in place from the start of your course.  This contact can be via email, a phone appointment or if it’s convenient for you to travel to the university, a face-to-face appointment with your Disability Adviser.

SSiD

Based in the Students' Union and dealing with over 100,000 enquiries from students a year, SSiD is a 'One-Stop-Shop' for general student-related enquiries. SSiD aims to answer the majority of student enquiries from a single location. For more information click here.
