Your Voice

The University places great value on the student voice and there are various opportunities for you to get involved, both to have your say and also to represent the views of other students. In DLL, you can sign up to be a student representative (academic rep) - this is rewarding work and can help you develop useful skills such as communication and leadership. It can also give you a greater understanding of how the University works, as well as enabling you to play a role in decision making in your department.

DLL has an active student-staff committee (SSC) which is made up of DLL student academic reps and a number of DLL academic staff. and meets several times over the course of the academic year. All students can attend SSC, while Academic Reps are tasked with collecting and representing the views of their fellow students and presenting these at SSC meetings, taking part in discussions about a range of issues including:

If you are interested in becoming an Academic Rep, please see below. Academic Reps are appointed and trained by the Students' Union - see their role description here.

In DLL we don't only listen to the student voice; we act upon it. Each year we produce a summary of 'You Said, We Did' setting out our responses to issues raised by students.

Becoming an Academic Rep

Each year we look for at least one student to represent their peers on each subject strand - Social Science, Natural Science, Humanities or Health, to feed back concerns and suggestions - and also to let us know when things are working well.  This is an official Student Union role which you can use on your HEAR. Training and support for Academic Reps is provided by the Students' Union. To find out more, see their web pages.

For more information, please watch this video about becoming an academic rep, produced by the University of Sheffield Student Union.

If you are interested in this role in DLL, we would be delighted to hear from you! You can fill out the interest form below.

If you have any questions about signing up, please contact academicreps@sheffield.ac.uk.

Once recruited, you will find a list of DLL's Academic Reps below, who can bring issues you raise to Student Staff Committee. You are free to approach any Rep about any aspect of your studies, but their degree track will be included here to give you an idea of who might be best placed to take your concerns forward.

Student Staff Committees

All students, whether Academic Reps or not, are welcome to attend Student-Staff Committee.

Dates in 2023-24 are:

You can find the Agenda and Minutes of previous meetings in the Student Voice Google Drive.

You said, we did

Each year we produce a summary of issues previously raised by Student Reps, and how DLL responded.

You Said, We Did

Learning and Teaching Committees

Each year we appoint two student members to DLL's Learning and Teaching Committee.

These are not advocacy roles, but are about participating in - and bringing the student perspective to - decisions about learning, teaching and assessment (usually for future years) in DLL. This role presents an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning, teaching and assessment, quality assurance and regulation.  The commitment is four meetings, and associated preparation,  over the course of the academic year.

Please get in touch with Sarah (s.hale@sheffield.ac.uk) if you are interested in joining Learning and Teaching Committee.

Tell US module feedback

At the end of each module,  you'll be asked to complete a feedback questionnaire. The responses we get really do help us improve modules' content and delivery for future years.
