NCEA Level 2 Design and Visual Communication

Aims

To build on the foundation of skills and understanding established in Level 1 to develop innovative solutions for spatial, product and graphic design contexts.

Course Content

In Year 12, learners work with a design thinking process in order to develop and refine ideas for a ferry terminal at Steamer Basin in Dunedin. In order to develop an in depth understanding of user needs and context, learners go on a Monarch Wildlife Cruise Tour. Through exploring possible outcomes, learners develop their understanding of specific spatial design knowledge. They then develop seating for their terminal in order to develop their understanding of product design. Finally learners apply graphic design principles to develop a resolved presentation of their spatial and product design work from throughout the year.

Skills

Through studying Design and Visual Communication, learners are challenged to be innovative, creative, and to show initiative. Learners are encouraged to think deeply about their designs’ application and consider the requirements of their designs’ in terms of user implications, site and construction with visual communication.
