NCEA Level 2 Outdoor Education
A semester based course for Year 12 - Semester 1, Term 1 and 2. Students would gain 2 study periods during terms 3 and 4.
Aims
To develop a background knowledge and understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of outdoor education, sustainability education, environmental education and social responsibility
To involve learners in a wide range of outdoor experiences. Predominately in our local environment
To provide opportunities for personal, leadership and social development by interacting with others in challenging activities
To gain confidence in the outdoors
Course Content
leadership development
safety and risk management
outdoor skill based activities: including mountain biking, tramping, rock climbing, waka ama and kayaking
environmental education
assessment – all assessments are internal
4 day 3 night camp in Fiordland with the Year 12 PE class
Qualification gained
7 credits are offered from two Level 2 Achievement Standards. One of these standards is the same as Level 2 PE but in a different context, this would mean, if students took both PE and OED, students would have 3 attempts to gain these credits (2.4).

Prior knowledge required
Learners must display a genuine interest/passion for the outdoors, what it can offer them and give back to it. All learners will need to have access to appropriate outdoor clothing. A comprehensive list can be provided from the school Physical Education Department
