SGS Frequently Asked Questions (Back to School 2020)

***Circumstances related to COVID-19 may change throughout the coming school year, and we will keep all parents informed if conditions change. ***

1. Will grading policies change if my child starts school via Remote Asynchronous Instruction?

Based on TEA guidelines, school grading policies for remote student work must be consistent with those used before COVID-19 for on-campus assignments. Any virtual environment, by choice or by governmental decision, will follow the same grading guidelines as in person instruction, as set forth in our handbook and academic guides.

In turn, the grading policy in place on the campus will continue in a virtual environment and will not move to other systems such as pass/fail. This is also covered in this additional TEA guidance.

2. Will daily attendance be taken via Remote Asynchronous Instruction?

Yes, TEA requires that attendance is taken daily in any remote/virtual instruction. The District is currently evaluating how to make this best fit the needs of our District.

3. If a student tests positive, do his or her classmates need to quarantine as well?

Students or staff who come into close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days and may not return to campus during that time.

4. What will happen if my child who is receiving face-to-face instruction needs to go on an individualized quarantine period?

Individual elementary/junior high students can transition to a temporary “Remote Asynchronous Instruction” educational model determined by school officials. The student(s) will continue to receive instruction from their classroom teacher. The length of the individual quarantine will be based on health guidelines provided by state and local agencies. SGISD is waiting for further direction at this time.

5. Will SGS use partitions, or something else to provide a physical barrier between students in the classrooms?

Desks or tables will be socially distanced as much as instructionally possible following considerations from CDC and TEA guidelines. Pk-5th grade classrooms will be equipped with clear partitions and be encouraged to wear face masks during transitions in large areas. Junior High Students will practice social distance practices and be required to wear a face mask inside the classroom.

General education students who benefit from special education services will have additional face-to-face measures including clear barriers during small group instruction.

6. What school supplies does my child need for school?

Basic school supplies such as pencils, pens, crayons, markers, color pencils, glue sticks and paper will be purchased by SGS for all students. Additional school supplies that students might need will be requested on the 1st day of school. SGS is partnering with Educational Products, Incorporation (EPI), and families will be able to purchase student’s supplies as soon as they become available. Supplies will be delivered to the school.

In addition, SGS will not be allowing regular student backpacks/athletic duffle bags at the beginning of the year. Drawstring/mini backpacks that do not exceed dimensions 14” x 18.25” can be carried throughout the day by each student.

PK3 and PK4 students will need to bring a plastic mat the first day of school. No material mats will be allowed.

7. Will Junior High students be required to change for P.E. and athletics?

Yes, all Junior High students will be required to change for P.E. and athletics. They will need to bring a spirit shirt with black shorts, that abide to our dress code guidelines, to change. These clothes can be brought inside their drawstring bag.

8. Will I be able to take lunch for my child?

No. For the 1st nine weeks we will not be accepting any food deliveries, until we can resume back to normal operations.

9. What if I need to pick up my child early?

Parents/guardians will be required to call the front office ahead of time. Once they arrive at school, they may check out students from the front office. We will only allow 2 visitors at a time to be inside our office area, so it will be important that parents call ahead of time.

10. Will there be Meet the Teacher Night days?

As of today, the committee has decided for a virtual video. All families will be able to see the classroom virtually and ask questions if needed to.

Please note: We encourage students to bring bottled water. Water fountains will not be operating.
