2020-2021 Plan to Return to School
Update: December 1, 2020
SGISD Parents and Community,
SGISD-Return to School Procedures
We are very proud of our students and know that parents have made a choice to enroll their children with SGISD because we offer a safe, academically challenging and opportunity driven education. Our goal is for our students to have every opportunity to succeed. In order for a student to participate virtually 100% of the time he/she will need to demonstrate the following criteria:
1. Understanding/mastery of grade level TEKS being taught.
2. Meet 95% attendance (participation) in online delivery instructional method and
3. Progress reports/report cards show passing grades.
SGISD does not have plans at this time to discontinue remote learning as a choice due to the increasing number of cases in Kleberg county; however, the academic success of our students is our top priority. If a child does not demonstrate the necessary progress measures revocation of remote learning is a possibility. A Campus Administrator will notify parents of their intent to revoke remote learning for their child based on teacher recommendation. Progress in understanding/mastery of TEKS, attendance and grades will be monitored weekly. Transition Students/Parents will be notified 2 weeks prior to the expected face to face return date. Appealing decision to cancel remote learning
Once a student is identified as being in need of returning face to face, parents may appeal the decision. Appeals will be assessed individually based upon the documented need for a student to continue learning remotely. An example may be if a child has an underlying health condition that requires virtual instruction. Parents will have an opportunity to submit a medical exemption approved by the primary care physician. For all other requests for 100% remote learning, parents must visit with the campus principal.
Update: July 16, 2020
SGISD Parents and Community,
Due to the increased positive results in Kleberg county, the decision has been made to begin school July 29th 100% virtually. This decision was not easy, but for the safety of our students and staff we feel it is best.
Equipment that needs to be checked out to students will be on 7/27 and 7/28.
Specific details will be communicated through your campus administration.
Back to School Options
Santa Gertrudis ISD will offer two options of instructional delivery models for our students: Face- to-Face in-person learning on campus, or Remote Asynchronous Instruction. The Asynchronous Instruction option is being provided for our families who have health and safety concerns with sending their children back to school. Visit the links below to learn more about each option:
Santa Gertrudis ISD realizes that not all courses will effectively translate to a virtual learning environment, particularly specialized courses offered to secondary (7th – 12th grade) students (examples: an advanced science lab, welding, or a certified nursing assistant course). For these specialized courses that are not offered at-home. For these courses that cannot be offered at home, Santa Gertrudis counselors will work with you student to find a suitable course. In addition, some specialized courses that are offered in at-home learning may require in-person learning experiences on campus. Please visit with your school counselor if you have any questions. UIL extracurriculars, such as fine arts, band, and athletics, will also be available as in-person activities.
Regardless of which learning option you choose for your child, the expectations for coursework and the grading system will be the same for both Face-to-Face and Asynchronous Instruction. Santa Gertrudis ISD believes this is the most fair and equitable solution for all of our students. Applicable courses in 9th-12th grade will be included in calculating GPA and class rank for both in-person and Asynchronous Instruction students.
Beginning Monday, July 6, parents you will receive a commitment form in your weekly call out asking you to make a commitment for your child(ren) to choose either Face-to-Face or Asynchronous Instruction for the first nine of weeks of the Fall 2020 semester. In order for SGISD to finalize staffing requirements, we are asking that this commitment be made no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16. Your child’s schedule and teacher assignments cannot be finalized until we receive your commitment, so please consider completing the form as soon as possible and return to Academy or SG.
Students will be expected to remain in their chosen option through at least a 9-week grading period in order to limit scheduling and staffing complexities. We understand that circumstances could change for our families throughout the semester, and adjustments will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
