Seymour Public Schools follows state and federal guidelines to determine when a student has achieved English language proficiency and no longer requires EL/ML support services.
A student is eligible to exit EL/ML services when the following criteria are met:
Achieves a Level 4 (Proficient) or 5 (Above Proficient) on the state-approved English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment (LAS Links Test) in the following three areas: Overall Score AND Reading AND Writing
Once these proficiency levels are met:
The student is reclassified as a former EL/ML and exits direct EL/ML instruction/ support services at the end of the school year.
Parents/guardians receive a formal notification letter informing them of the student’s exit from the EL/ML program and entry into the monitoring phase.
Monitoring Process
Students who exit EL/ML services are closely monitored for academic progress for a period of four (4) years, in accordance with state and federal requirements. During this time, the EL/ML Department will:
Review grades and classroom performance
Communicate regularly with teachers to ensure continued language development
Recommend or provide informal linguistic support as needed
If concerns arise during the monitoring period, additional support may be provided in collaboration with classroom teachers, support staff, and families.
