Students attending Sewanhaka High School have at least once passed the arch near the entrance of the football field but have not been able to understand its significance. The arch was made in memory of Anthony T. Dwyer. Dwyer was a police officer who had attended Sewanhaka High School and was an excellent player in Lacrosse and Football while he attended Sewanhaka. On October 17, 1989, While responding to a robbery, Dwyer along with other officers had gone to arrest the suspects. While chasing them Dwyer went to a rooftop where he was pushed from while trying to catch a suspect causing his death, his influence on the community still remains strong. In his memory The Anthony T. Dwyer Memorial Award is given each year to celebrate his legacy and the good he did for others.
The Anthony T. Dwyer Memorial Award is a way to remember how important Dwyer was to the Sewanhaka community. At the 2016 graduation ceremony, former Principal Debra Lidowsky gave the award to Elijah Tracey, showing that Dwyer's legacy is still acknowledged today. This award helps keep Dwyer's spirit alive, motivating both current and future students.
Sewanhaka High School has always encouraged its students to stick together and stay strong, particularly during tough times. His spirit shines through the words of Merlyn John, the valedictorian of 2016. John spoke to her classmates about the importance of facing obstacles with courage: “No matter what challenges you face, and you will face challenges, I hope you meet them head on with the strength, determination and perseverance you learned at Sewanhaka.”
Alumnus Anthony Sampogna recalled the bonds he developed during his time at Sewanhaka, remarking, “There is something special about seeing people we grew up with. Many of us attended the same elementary school — Covert Avenue. We went way back.”
As each student passes through the archway at Sewanhaka High School's football field, they encounter a plaque with Dwyer’s name engraved along with his face. This silent tribute serves as a powerful reminder of his lasting influence. By honoring Dwyer in this way, the school ensures that his memory is stitched into its values, motivating future generations to embrace the principles he championed and to uphold Dwyer’s enduring legacy.
These reflections underscore the strong sense of community and support that defines Sewanhaka High School—a spirit that steadfastly honors and remembers individuals such as Anthony T. Dwyer
