The surprise of CBS News coming to our school to cover No Tech Tuesday brought much attention. Much excitement was felt in Sewanhaka’s hallway as big cameras recorded students. CBS News came on January 14th to cover No Tech Tuesday, an initiative it called “to limit access to technology,” as it has been a major issue in schools. No Tech Tuesday was made earlier this year by our new superintendent, Regina Agrusa, to tackle the issue of technology in schools in order to make students focus more in class without digital distractions. This initiative has been implemented in many classrooms in our school, but still, many don’t do it. Why this new rule isn't really effective is because many teachers say that No Tech Tuesday terminates schedules and that students still have access to their phones, regardless of putting iPads away. “The school iPad is still a gadget that the school has provided us, that we can use; teachers assign work on it,” said Vincent Colletta, a sophomore. When asking teachers about their views on No Tech Tuesday and CBS News’s coverage, many had different opinions. “Any time the media can be used to promote an educational initiative in a positive light, it benefits our system.” “In courses that terminate in a state or national assessment, teachers are strapped for time to accomplish our learning objectives. In science classes, we have many lab activities that allow us to get students off devices. Sometimes they fall on Tuesdays, and sometimes they don’t”, stated Ms. Foley, a chemistry teacher. When asking a Spanish teacher, Ms. Madruga, she expressed, “I think that it was nice that CBS News came, it was an interesting experience,” “I’m not sure if everyone did it, the teachers” “No Tech Tuesday is a good idea, but I think the school should work harder to enforce it so more teachers can do it, many teachers don’t.” Overall, opinions of CBS News’s coverage of Sewanhaka’s No Tech Tuesday throughout the school were an exciting, thrilling experience for many.
