The Viscardi Center in Albertson will house the Museum of Disability History, set to open in the fall of 2025. The venue will be the nation’s only physical museum to tell the story of people with disabilities. Nassau County is investing $500,000 in the museum, and another $100,000 to market it. The investment is part of the county’s economic development plan to attract tourism while teaching about the struggle of people with disabilities. The Viscardi Center provides programs and services that are designed to educate students and adults who have disabilities.
Social Studies teacher Mr. Rawls voiced his opinion regarding the new museum. “I think it’s great that we’ll have a museum that will show the diversity of the United States with inclusion.” Freshman Hira Babar additionally added, “It’s really important that their achievements are showcased for future generations to see.”
