*Students should always defer to their Theology teacher's deadlines; however, we can take end-of-year service hours through 11:59pm on May 29, 2026 so that there is no gap in the service year for those we serve.
Verification of Service: A photo of the student completing their service is mandatory when logging hours. You can upload three photos if you'd like, but only one photo is required for verification of the service.
Freshmen & Sophomores: 10 hours per year, with at least 5 hours completed by the end of the first semester (11:59pm on January 16, 2026.)
Juniors: 14 hours per year, with at least 7 hours completed by the end of the first semester (11:59pm on January 16, 2026.)
Seniors: 20 hours per year, with at least 10 hours completed by the end of the first semester (11:59pm on January 16, 2026.)
The program progresses in terms of focus as well as time commitment. Freshmen and sophomores are asked to try out different kinds of service opportunities, both direct and indirect, exploring and discerning what service they are passionate about. By junior and senior years, the goal is to select one place where all service is done. This progression fosters relationship building, commitment, efficiency, and growth as a servant leader at a selected agency.
The “learning” component is multi-tiered. From executive functioning skills to personal transformation and growth, the program complements classroom education, allowing students to put their values into action. Here's what you need to consider:
Community Focus: Service should extend beyond good deeds done for your family and friends. Helping family members and neighbors doesn't qualify and should be done because it's the right thing to do.
Alignment with Values: Service should reflect either the Corporal Works of Mercy or the Charisms of Holy Cross.
Corporal Works of Mercy: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead.
Charisms of Holy Cross: Hospitality, building positive relationships, zeal and humility, daily hope in Christ, trust in Divine Providence.
Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone: Service should challenge you to grow and make a difference.
Service must be completed at an agency or organization that has either a faith-based mission and/or serves an at-risk population in order to count. If you aren't sure, please ask Mrs. McGee!

Students must track their service hours using Mobile Serve. Log in at app.mobileserve.com using your SEHS email address via Google. Upon logging in, students will answer brief reflection questions and upload photos of their service. Each entry is verified by a St. Edward staff member, requiring contact information for the service supervisor.
Directions: How to Log Your Hours
Be sure to get the following details:
Name of organization/agency/place
Name of service supervisor and their email (shouldn’t be a parent)
Photo(s) of student serving in jpeg format only!
Everyone who signs up is expected to follow through on their commitment. However, life happens and things come up, so please let me and the agency know if you cannot make it. Students who fail to communicate an absence in advance are removed from future sign-ups.
The Service Learning Program is a partnership between Campus Ministry and the Theology Department. Each Theology teacher will assign a points value to the service hours as a class assignment.
The first grading checkpoint is at the end of the first semester (around mid-January). By this time, students should have completed, logged and reflected on at least half of their annual hourly requirement in order to receive full credit. (5, 5, 7, or 10, depending on grade level, for 100%) Hours must be verified by the service supervisor to be approved, so students should leave enough time for the verification process. There are no extensions.
At the end of the school year, there is a second grading checkpoint (due by the last day of Finals) and students should have completed all of their annual required hours to receive full credit. (10, 10, 14 or 20, depending on grade level, for 100%) There are no extensions again.
Any additional hours done by the first checkpoint will carry forward to the second grading checkpoint, so completing more than half of the service hours early is acceptable.
Students who have completed more than the annual requirement by the first semester checkpoint will be recognized on the school tv display boards for "Exceeding their Annual Required Hours." (must be more than 10, 10, 14, or 20)
