Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. - Colossians 3:23-24
Service is a year-round commitment woven into the fabric of every academic year at St. Edward. It's an essential part of becoming a well-rounded leader and is part of the St. Ed's education, not something added onto it. This ongoing commitment allows students to progressively develop their service skills throughout their high school journey.
Partnership with the Theology Dept.: St. Ed's expects all students to participate in service as an outward expression of our Holy Cross values. Therefore, students will receive a grade in their Theology class for correctly completing the program requirements as stated in the Requirements tab on this website. Students should be diligent in logging and reflecting on the service hours since this is a graded assignment.
Service is Needed Year Round: Service is needed year-round and so the Service Learning Program is an annual program, not semester-based. Students are encouraged to start their service hours early in the service year and hours done early will carry will forward throughout the first and second semester checkpoints. Over 50% of Edsmen serve, log and reflect on more than the minimum required hours each year.
Spiritual and Leadership Growth: The charism and spirituality of the Congregation of the Holy Cross is present in the lives of all Edsmen. Through service to marginalized populations, students are encouraged to embody Holy Cross servant leadership, making meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.
Holistic Development: Our Service Learning Program begins freshman year and progresses through a four-year curriculum. It challenges students to grow as Servant Leaders, reflecting on their experiences and deepening their understanding of social justice and compassion.
Wide-Ranging Opportunities: We partner with a variety of non-profits and offer numerous on-campus service opportunities. Students can also choose their own service opportunities as long as they fit with the program parameters. They are highly encouraged to check if their service will count BEFORE they do it.
