Know the sample size limits for the SEM.
Samples should be well secured with no loose particles.
Samples should be clean.
Conductivity matters - it draws electrons away from the surface and improves the generated electron signal.
Know the relative conductivity of your samples.
Conductors and semiconductors are easier to image than insulators.
Know the relative conductivity of your substrates.
Si is easier to image than glass.
Clean, flat edges image best.
Cleaved wafers should have good edges.
