CONCEPT
My conceptual approach was rooted in the idea of Samsara which refers to the cyclical nature of existence and the continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth. It can also be connected natural elements and the role they play in rituals associated with life and death. My design tries to embody the principle of continuity which is inherent in Samsara. Each space flows into the next and is arranged to follow the order of the cremation process. The incorporation of natural elements like courtyards and water bodies symbolizes the continuity of life.
FINAL DESIGN
The pathway is a staggered design that creates distinct zones while also maintaining an overall sense of continuity. Each space serves a specific purpose, guiding visitors from one phase of the process. The pathway first leads to the body preparation areas which are connected to the cremation areas and the waiting areas to help facilitate easy movement.
The design incorporates water bodies in the back of the ceremonial hall and ritual pavilions. Stairs connect the hall and pavilions to the water bodies to facilitate easy movement. These stairs also double up as seating spaces to create informal gathering areas.
