Introduction
In this week's class, we will review some of the more important things from Lesson 1 (orientation). We will then go on to focus on some of the tools you need for an online class.
The tools which will be discussed include:
• Zoom: Watch Video, hands on activity
• Canvas: Visit the site, show links, view and participate in discussion
• Viewing and downloading files from website: Clicking on files, saving and printing
• Using your student email: Finding the email address in “your portal”, setting it up for the first time, forwarding to a personal email account, finding it later on Outlook
• Saving the link to the CWT class website on computer or phone: Demonstrate and then create one shortcut
• Cut/copy/paste: Demonstrate and practice
Zoom
In class:
We will begin by watching the 15-minute video on Zoom. We will take some time with this to make sure that we all understand the Zoom classroom. During this session you may be asked to do things like exit full screen, share your screen, raise your hand, join a breakout room, check your settings, add a virtual background or more.
You might want to use this summary page to take notes as you watch the video.
Online Task:
Open video (above) . Watch video. If you are not currently in the Zoom room, try to remember some of these things the next time you join.
Canvas
In class:
Our class does have a Canvas shell. It is not where you will find our course website, but it is there for reference and for accessing the discussion board. We will demonstrate how to find the site on your course website and will then look at our class on the Canvas site. You may be asked to submit a reply to a post or if you like to create a new post.
(Link to Canvas: https://sdccd.instructure.com/)
Online task:
Open your canvas site and click on your dashboard. You will need your 10 digit student number. Unless you have changed it, the password is your birthday in 8 digits (mmddyyyy). Find your course and click on it. Click on “Discussions” to view discussions. To post one, click on + Discussion. Don’t forget to save and publish!
Viewing and downloading files from the website
In class:
We will go to the Week 1 lesson and demonstrate how to view and download links. This section will cover how to print a document as well as what to do when you download them.
Online task:
Open Week 1 (Orientation). This is found under Topics Spring 2024 on the course website (cwtsdce.org). Click on the link which says, “Handout of technology terms”. From there, try to print the handout or download it to your device and just read it. No sign in is required!
Note about print:
Click on print and it opens in your web browser. You will have to click on the printer again in this version to print. You will then see the “print dialogue” page. Click on the down arrow next to destination if it is not showing your favored printer. Select how many pages you want and how many copies. You might have the option to print on both sides. Click Print when ready.
Note about download:
When you click on the download arrow, it will open in your Finder or your Files Explorer window. Select a destination (documents/a specific folder) and rename if necessary. Click Save. (In this example, it is being saved to Downloads, which is the default for most computers. You can click on another folder if you wish.)
Your Student Email
In class:
We will go to the portal site to find your student email under personal information. We will then open Outlook and use it for the first time, setting up the authentication and forwarding it. Finally, we will go to Outlook and view the email.
Online task:
First, view the video on student emails. Then:
1. Look for your student email address
2. Open Outlook and set it up
3. Forward it to your personal email address
4. Go back to Outlook and make sure you can find it as well
5. NOTE: Our student site (sdcestudent55.com) has more directions and instructions. You can go directly to the student email section by clicking here.
How to cut, copy and paste
Cut, Copy, and Paste are basic computer commands that allow you to duplicate or move text, files, or images from one place to another. These commands can help you organize your files, compile information, and more efficiently use your computer.
Copy: This command creates a duplicate of the selected content. The original item stays in its place, and a copy of it can be placed elsewhere.
Cut: This command also creates a copy, but it removes the selected content from its original location. When you paste a cut item, it moves from the original place to the new one.
Paste: This command is used after cutting or copying and allows you to place the copied or cut content into a new location.
