This course introduces students to a variety of theatrical techniques: role-play, improvisation, tableau, character building, scripting, movement, story theatre and drama games, in order to help students develop self-confidence, public speaking and teamwork skills. Students will be expected to attend and participate and take risks even though this is not a "performance" course. Students will also be introduced to elements of film and video production as well as how to use sound and lighting equipment.
Students will study a variety of theatrical genres and forms including Greek Theatre, Commedia Dell’Arte, Shakespeare, and 20th and 21st Century theatre. Performance techniques will be introduced, and students will work with their own written work and learn how to analyze existing scripts. Students will explore both stage and film performance and develop theatrical pieces including technical elements. They will also attend some local theatre productions on their own or as part of class field trips.
