Literacy - Week 6
(week 6 printable at the bottom of page)
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Part 1: Read the first page of a book of your choice. Then talk about how the author uses that first page to “hook” the reader to continue reading. How could you use that idea in your own writing? Experiment with different ways you could start your story to hook your reader.
Part 2: Brainstorm a list of possible story writing topics for future use. Choose one idea from your list to complete today and create a plan. Think about who your audience will be and why you want them to be your audience. What type of writing would be the best (e.g. mystery, nonfiction, adventure)?
Part 3: Using your brainstormed list from Part 2 and the ideas from Part 1, create the rough draft of your story today. Read your writing to a family member and discuss any changes you could make.
Part 4: Think about the features of a book jacket. What information or images are included on it? Why would this information or images be needed? How could this information or images be used to grab a potential reader’s attention?
Part 5: Read through your rough draft again, make any changes suggested to you. Then, design a book jacket to cover your final copy. Celebrate completing your published work with your family.
Part A Gather a few posters/pamphlets. What features need to be included on a pamphlet or a poster? Why? Brainstorm a list of possible writing topics for future use in creating a pamphlet or poster.
Part B Choose a pamphlet and a poster of choice to read today. Talk about the different text features (e.g. Title, graphics/charts, subheadings) of each of them. Choose a couple of text features to compare on a poster and pamphlet. Which one is more effective? Why?
Part C Using your ideas from Part A and what you learned in Part B and design a poster or a pamphlet on a topic of your choice. Remember to include text features that you noticed from the samples you gathered that may benefit your audience/purpose.
Part D Show your pamphlet or poster to a family member. Discuss if your audience understands your message and any changes you could make. Add any text features that would help your audience understand your message. (For example map, chart, list, picture, caption, or glossary.)
Part E Using the rough draft from Part C, create the final copy of your pamphlet or poster. Celebrate completing your published work with your family.
