Week 1

*** Please understand that you are not expected to complete all of these activities ***

It is suggested that you try to complete 4 - 6 activities per week. Of course, you are welcome to complete more if you wish :)

I have included many options to give you a variety of ideas to choose from.

  • Write a letter to yourself that could be placed in a time capsule for others to read 10 years from now. Write about how you are feeling and what activities you are doing to keep yourself busy at home.

  • Select a book to read for at least 20 minutes. While reading, imagine what the characters look like. Choose one character and draw a picture of them.

  • Create an advertisement/poster to encourage people to practice social distancing. Remember to include a title, key information and a graphic to grab the attention of your audience. Post this in your window.

  • Select a non-fiction (real life, fact based) book, magazine or news article to read today. Before reading, write down ideas about what you already know about the topic and any questions you might have.

  • Find a news article and examine the headline. Think of alternative headlines and talk about why they would or wouldn’t be likely to attract readers and why.

  • Call a relative/neighbour on the phone. Ask them how they're doing, listen carefully to them and ask questions.

  • View a commercial or find a print advertisement. Discuss strategies the advertiser used to influence their audience.

  • Review a movie, book or game and send it to a friend. Include some of the main ideas but don’t give away the ending. Share your reactions and recommendations with your friend.

  • Interview a family member about their life, about an experience they had or something they know a lot about. Record their main points with jot notes. Decide how you might share what you learned with others, for example retell to someone else, write an account, create a timeline.

  • Think about the people in your neighbourhood and what kind of supportive messages they might need to hear. Decide on a message or image that you could draw with chalk on the sidewalk or post on your window or door.

  • Create as many words as you can that have a common pattern. For example: How many words can you make that end with - ow, -ing, -ate, -ough, etc.

  • Read a book with someone else. Each person takes a part such as the narrator or a character. Practice reading with expression as that character. If you have an audience, you can perform this reading together for someone else. (In your home, video or perform live via a phone or device).

  • Create a grocery list by asking members of your family what they might need and by looking for what might be needed in your fridge and cupboards.
