Course Overview:
The BTEC Technical Award in Health and Social Care can help you take your first steps towards a career caring
for people and communities. You’ll learn the essential skills needed to support people with a wide range of needs, from babies and toddlers to adults and the elderly.
This qualification is designed to enable learners to gain a sound theoretical and practical understanding of
all aspects of working within the Health and Social Care Sectors. Learners develop their knowledge and
understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Learners are guided to develop generic key sector skills and knowledge of specific areas of interest in the sector which are essential for the
modern day workplace. BTEC Technical Awards motivate learners, open doors to progression into further study and responsibility within the workplace.
Course Content:
Learners must complete three components over the duration of the programme including two internally
assessed coursework units and one external task set and marked by the examining board.
• Component 1: Human Lifespan Development Internally set and assessed by coursework and equal to 30% of the course
• Component 2: Health and Social Care Services and Values. Internally set and assessed by coursework and equal to 30% of the course
• Component 3: Health and Wellbeing: Externally set task which is equivalent to 40% of the course. Task
may be taken in February and again in May/June
Extra Curricular Opportunities:
Learners will be provided with the opportunity to visit a range of different health and social care work sectors.
Career Prospects and Transferable Skills:
The programme is delivered by teachers who have a wide expertise in the sector. Learners may expect to cover interesting topics relating to the real world and develop transferable skills in the process including the ability to:
• Enhance their English and mathematical competence in relevant applied scenarios
• Work as a member of a team, solve problems, become independent learners and develop personal
learning and thinking skills
• Navigate a route through education that has a clear progression pathway into post 16, further education or an apprenticeship
• Progression to Post 16 to study either BTEC Level 3 Vocational qualification or Level 3 Technical Certificate
• Further study will lead to University or the world of work where you may study to become an:
Adult Nurse, Paediatric Nurse, Social Worker/Carer, Healthcare Assistant, Midwife, Childcare and
many more
