Course Overview:
GCSE Drama is about the exploration of themes and issues that affect our everyday lives. You will have the
opportunity to create your own pieces and work with a variety of plays. Throughout this course you will
cultivate your drama skills and will have the opportunity to be experimental in your style. You will analyse
characters and plays, developing a deep understanding of the world of theatre.
Course Content:
The course is in three parts:
• You will create a devised piece looking at a particular theme/ issue and experiment with a range of drama techniques which will be performed to an audience. During this exciting process, you will keep a diary log, which will show knowledge of how your devised piece evolved throughout the rehearsal process. Devising equates to 40% of GCSE which is examined on your practical performance and devising log
• You will choose a play to explore and perform two key sections of the play to an audience, demonstrating
your ability to show a range of characters and styles. Text in performance equates to 20% of GCSE which
is examined on your practical performance of a chosen text
• You will study a set play through practical and written exploration. You will then complete a written exam showing your knowledge of this play from a director’s perspective. You will watch a live theatre performance and evaluate this performance in the written exam. Written exam equates to 40% of GCSE which is examined on your theatre knowledge and a live theatre review
Assessment Structure:
Component 1
A written exam with 3 sections:
Section A will be multiple choice assessing your knowledge of key terms.
Section B will be based on how you would perform certain sections from a play studied throughout the year. Section C will be a live theatre review of a show you have seen.
Component 2
Internally assessed, externally moderated devised performance based on a stimulus given by the teachers.
Devising a written log explaining the rehearsal process (2000 words).
Component 3
Externally assessed scripted performance, showing 2 extracts from the same play of your choice.
Extra Curricular Opportunities:
There are many extra-curricular opportunities through the drama department such as becoming a Drama
Prefect, performing and helping with the school production, performing in assemblies and at external venues and going to see live theatre productions on school trips.
Career Prospects and Transferable Skills:
Through studying GCSE Drama you will have the opportunity to take it as an A-Level and then either go into higher education or work within the performing arts industry. Drama not only allows you to develop your practical and theoretical knowledge of theatre it also enables you to work with a variety of individuals and understand the importance of teamwork and communication. Being able to present yourself in front of others is a key element in many career choices, whether in a meeting, taking part in presentations or going for
interviews. The study of Drama can help you to develop a wide range of transferable skills which you can take into any career.
