STEM Day/Young Enterprise

STEM DAY

This November, 60 students from years 9 and 10 took part in SCWAs first STEM day. The event, which was hosted by the Smallpeice Trust, saw students taking part in an autonomous vehicle challenge. Students were challenged to design and build self driving cars, using Lego Mindstorms. Once built, the students had to program the cars to recognise colours and navigate their way around colour-coded maps. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, with students saying the experience was ‘amazing’ and they ‘couldn’t wait for the next experience’. At the end of the day, students presented their finished cars to the rest of the students.

Young Enterprise Group

On the 18th and 19th of November, our Young Enterprise Group started to fundraise some money to start up our own business. We performed a doughnut sale out in the Quad at break and lunchtime on Thursday and Friday, which was a massive success. The donations are going into the creation of our new product, so that our team of 6 can gain some experience and responsibility for what it is like raising money from the ground, also developing business skills and techniques to create our own start up business. The Young Enterprise Programme is a national charity who specialise in enterprise and financial education for the younger generation. It is a way for young people to realise their potential beyond their academic life, and experience what it is like when running your own business and build a successful and sustainable future for them. We luckily got the opportunity to be a part of this amazing programme and have already started to develop our business product and establish the company's brand image and name, Saturn22. The fundraiser was a huge success, making a profit of £50 from the sale that is all going into the creation of our product. We will continue with our fundraisers and will hopefully begin to launch our product and business next year.
