Black History Month

Black History Month at Stationers' Crown Woods Academy

Black History month was celebrated at Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy through a range of activities during assembly, tutor time and lunch time events.

On Screen was launched with a focus on ‘Black and British by the BBC’. A range of BBC programmes were shown during lunch time that celebrated Black British producers, actors, and screen writers. Students were able to watch a range of television programmes that included documentaries and sitcoms.

Through discussions with staff and students here at Stationers' Crown Woods Academy we are developing a ‘Curriculum for All’ to which Black History Month was a great springboard. We are striving to create a curriculum where all students feel that they are represented and can make connections with.

Brixton Soup Kitchen

Mrs Thomas and Ms Neil along with 13 members of the Charitable Events Committee (Powerful Young Voices) volunteered for an afternoon at the Brixton Soup Kitchen. Students took part in cooking, putting up Christmas decorations, sorting the clothing bank and creating Christmas parcels. Some students even braved the cold to look at vegetables growing in the attached garden that is used to create dishes in the soup kitchen but also sent to the local hospital kitchen. All trip attendees volunteered their time and were perfect ambassadors for the academy, speaking with local service users. It was educational for us to learn that not all service users were homeless.

The Powerful Young Voices committee are planning their next volunteering session and investigating how the school can help our local community.
