Science:  Careers In the Curriculum

Science

This term our year 7s wrote a letter to the local council about the benefits of stormwater plants as part of one of their assessments. They needed to be able to explain how the water cycle worked and the environmental benefits associated with using planters to negate the negative effects of stormwater runoff.

Our year 9s had to imagine that they worked for an advertisement company and produce an infographic that outlines what climate change is and what humans can do to reduce our impact.

All years had an assembly for Biology Week, in which they were given information regarding the different biology careers open to them. This also included talks from both staff and students on why they chose Biology.

We also took part in Chemistry Week this term, which focused on sustainability. Students looked into the problems with plastic pollution and investigated how bioplastics, which are biodegradable plastics made from household substances, could be used to mitigate problems from pollution. The students then made some of their own plastics, using vinegar, glycerine and cornstarch.

In the STEM club, students have been working on a project based on a zombie apocalypse. This allowed them to take on multiple roles involved with engineering different survival solutions. The highlights of this have been when they made parabolic ovens, and sound dampening shoes.

Medicine Conference

Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 were invited to an insight into medicine conference, which was run by medic mentor, who support students to get into medicine. We also had sixth form students take part in veterinary Science and medical conferences run by medic mentor and are currently organising Greenwich GPs doing 1:1 mentoring for our Year 12 students who would like to do a medical degree.
