Humanities:  Careers In the Curriculum

Physical Education

In Years 10 and 11 students have been looking at the importance of sports psychiatrists in elite level sports such as rugby, football and other team sports. Students were taught the influence that arousal levels have on performance within sport and the importance sports psychiatrists play in relieving these levels so that elite athletes can perform to a high standard within their chosen sport. They also looked at the role sports coaches play in keeping motivation levels up in sport and the impact this has on individuals and a team.

In Year 7-9 students were focusing on Health and Fitness during the Autumn Term. This area links to a variety of different careers within the sector such as personal trainers, sports coaches, nutritionists and many other roles. All students in KS3 were set the task of becoming a personal trainer. They had to identify their own strengths and weaknesses within each of the different components of fitness and choose two strengths and two weaknesses. We then asked to create a fitness programme like a personal trainer would on a day to day basis in order to improve one of their chosen weaknesses. The plan had to be specific to the weakness that they wanted to improve and this was completed by getting the students to choose the appropriate method of training and then design a complete session that consisted of sets, reps and timings in order to improve themselves.

Planning to improve your fitness

For this task you need to crate a circuit or HIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which should last for at least 20 minutes.

Things to consider:

Why have you chosen these exercises?

Do they exercises use similar movements to rugby/netball

Do the exercises use the same muscles needed in rugby/netball

Examples of different exercises:

Squats

Burpees

Star Jumps

Press Ups

Sit Ups

Dips

Skipping

Training Method:

HIT Training

Which 2 components of fitness are you aiming to improve?

Muscular endurance

Cardiovascular endurance

Why is a circuit or HIT a good type of training?

HIT or training circuits are amazing ways to stay fit and healthy as you are changing what you are doing (hence the name circuit) you will be working many different muscles in such a short space of time. For example, instead of doing a boxing session you could do a HIT workout and work everything, your core by doing sit ups, crunches etc. Your muscular endurance and strength by doing push-ups, plans etc. and you can work your cardiovascular endurance by skipping running etc. Another good thing about these training methods is they are not only efficient, but require little if not no equipment meaning it is suitable for anyone.

Complete the table by listing the exercises you are going to complete and also state the component of fitness that you will be aiming to improve state how long you will perform each exercise for or how many reps and set you will use. If designing a HIT workout, add when you will rest and for how long between each exercise and how long you will complete each exercise for:

Careers notice board

The PE team have also created a career based notice board in 2012 which illustrates the different university pathways that PE teachers within the department took and also the different courses that are available within sport across the UK. This allows students to research these universities and courses and points students on the correct steps for UCAS applications.
