English & Literacy: Careers In the Curriculum

English

In module 1 in English, Year 9 explored the media and learnt how to write like a journalist in the ‘News and the World’ unit. Currently Year 8 are developing their presentation and speaking skills through the ‘Speak Out’ unit. Here they are honing the skills needed to be effective in interviews for work, university and positions of responsibility: articulating ideas with clarity and precision, and developing confidence to speak in formal situations. At the start of the January term, Year 7 will be visiting the Globe Theatre where they will hear from ‘Globe Players’ on careers in acting and theatre education.

Over our GCSE study this term students have explored the fields of politics and sport through non-fiction texts in Year 10 as well as discussing psychology and mental health issues through our Year 11 Power and Conflict poetry unit. Our Year 11s will be visiting the Dominion Theatre in London to meet with poets and hear from examiners as they discuss their work.

Trip to Greenwich University

Our Sixth formers have been invited to attend the virtual twilight lectures at Greenwich University on the topics of Death in Elizabethan Tragedy and Analysis of American Modern Plays, preparing them for the challenges of university study. All Key Stage 5 students have been invited to attend theatre performances of 'The Mousetrap', 'Witness for the Prosecution' and 'Othello': the 'Witness for the Prosecution' was performed in a real life courtroom in London giving the students exposure to different workplaces as well as a theatre experience!

Literacy Mentoring

Our library hosts a peer reading scheme where sixth form students become mentors to younger students who struggle to read. The Library also offers work experience, should students wish to volunteer. The library is open for sixth form study daily between 08:00 - 16:00.
