Implementation
On the pages below, check out resources designed to support you in planning an effective scope and sequence, training staff, and communicating with stakeholders.
The training videos below were made by the creator and primary author of Be Good People, Nic van Oss, and last updated in 2022. If you work outside of the St. Croix River Education District and would like to discuss contracting for synchronous training, contact Nic.
Before you dive into your training video, here's a few of the top pieces of advice Nic hears from teachers:
"You don’t need to be the expert. Even though, as a functional adult, you really kinda are!"
"The more you talk about how the topic relates to your experiences, the better. For example, 'Yeah, I had a boss at Burger King who I did not get along with…'"
"Don't just ask 'Who can tell me...' and wait for kids to raise their hands. Use 'turn & talks' and other response techniques to engage more students and make discussion more 'safe' for students."
"Make sure you put the lesson in 'present mode'. Otherwise all the videos, GIFs, etc. aren't going to work right."
Training is only one part of effective implementation—monitoring fidelity and providing coaching support is very beneficial.
This Observation Form is a helpful tool for coaches, but it can also be used by teachers to self-reflect on their own instruction.
Engaging students in rich discussion is critical, but we can’t always get there by calling on students individually.
This handout breaks down a small handful of popular response options. Learn more about opportunities to respond.
