Salino

Nation Description

Salino is an oligarchy which stretches from central to southern Toltecan along the southern flank of the volcanically active Toltekanian Divide mountain range. Salino's capital is Granayo, a hub of trade and culture located in the coastal region. Industries vary by region, with tourism, fishing, and mineral extraction being some of Salino's most important sectors. Salino is highly involved in trading with most of Toltecan's countries due to its large size and favorable location.

Regions

Tasagua AgroMineral Commune

The western end of Salino is dominated by the twin cities of Cozumel and Dotana, which lie at the foot of the Toltekanian Divide mountains. The oligarchs of Cozumel control the manufacturing sector while the oligarchs of Dotana control the agricultural sector, as well as having significant influence over the fishing sector. They have formed an alliance that gives them almost de facto control of all production in the country, which often allows them to disregard the laws and decrees coming from the capital. Both cities are powered by aging nuclear power stations.

Capital Zone

The enfeebled capital zone consists of aging oligarchs from the early days of the republic, when vegetables and fruits were in short supply and they could build a small regional empire providing food and fertilizer to the masses to buy their loyalty. However, as the oligarches to the west united and grew in power, the capital region lost influence. It remains influential due to its historic connection to ancient Toltekanians, but the people are growing wary of constant nostalgia instead of powerful governance.

Toltekan Cultural Zone

Home of the ancient Toltekanians, from which the continent gets its name and from which all indigenous culture on the continent derives, this region is hallowed ground. People from all across the continent make pilgrimages to the ruins in this region to pay tribute to their unified heritage. This has allowed the local oligarchs to amass a significant amount of power from all the in-flowing tourist and pilgrim cash. A quasi-religious faction residing in the far regions of the mountains, however, is furious about the exploitation of ancient heritage and has been bombing and destroying ruins, believing that some things are meant to be lost to history and memory.

Pochomal Southern

The far eastern region of Salino consists of rugged mountains, resulting in poor infrastructure and connection to the rest of Salino and, indeed, the world. Indigenous and disaffected young adults alike reside in this region, engaging in heritage and subsistence farming and mining, far from the reach of oligarchs and the feeble central government.

Regime Structure

A parliament, with candidates elected by the population, but this parliament is highly influenceable and serves the interests of the country's oligarchies.

There are three main groups of oligarchies, two further west and one group in the capital.

Ideology

The country's ideology is based on the religious beliefs of the ancient Toltekans. The laws and customs of most of the population are based on these principles.

Oligarchies take advantage of these beliefs to perpetuate themselves in power.

History

Salino emerged from the union of several indigenous peoples, three of them being the most important at the time. Cozumel and Dotana were previously inhabited by enemy native societies, but with the union agreement signed in Toltekan and even because of their proximity, an alliance between the two native societies was established, developing the economy of this region to the point of becoming become today the economic center of the country. The Capital was built by the largest native society, the richest and most militarized of the period, this was in ancient times the economic center of the country. His relationship with the Toltekan can be explained through the pact of unity established in the face of an imminent war against a powerful enemy. Toltekan, was the place chosen to sign this agreement because it is a sacred place, which would prevent such a coalition from being disrespected. Pochomal came to be known at the time for being the place where the "revolts" began to be marginalized, because not all tribes, especially the smaller ones, agreed with the coalition.

People and Culture

Humble and working population. Oligarchies with concentrated powers. Small group of insurgents who are against the old customs and want the end of religious traditions in order to free themselves from certain traditions.

Our country’s religion is based on the pure principles of classical christianity. The Bible is not just a sacred book, it represents our virtues, wishes and fights, it’s our commandments and our law, it’s honored in our flag, being blessed and purified by the the star of the holy spirit. Our citizens, since childhood, are taught daily the traditional values of the family and church and we control our schools to preserve and protect our youth from modern temptations. The tithe is obligatory for all adults, the demand being 50% of the total income, for the maintenance and continuity or our installations. We vehemently condemn witchcraft, parallel religions, satanism, homosexuality and any other perverse and demonic practices. Our courts of justice are ready to punish and execute anyone that tries to hurt our good habits and customs, the only exceptions being foreigners, be it that they don’t engage exaggeratedly in moral detours. Our goal is to always safeguard good values, whatever it takes, order must be kept and progress must continue.

Week 2 - Resource Usage

Fish (fishing), dates (date farm), potatoes (potato farm), tomatoes (tomato farm), copper (copper mines), gold (gold mines), lithium (lithium mines), rare earth elements (rare earth element mine), phosphorus (phosphorus mine).
Wine grapes, coffee, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots. But everything for planting. Iron and oil.
As more developed agriculture will strengthen the capital's power, western groups need to find ways to remain influential as well, and the best way to do this would be to improve industry.
Despite being dominated by oligarchies, agriculture has always been a strong feature of the country and has some knowledge in the area. With so many volcanoes in the territory, the soil is fertile and very good for cultivation such as carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkins, as well as luxury crops such as high quality wines and coffee.
With an incentive in agrarian research and appeal to the population for measures that will stimulate the market through job creation, decrease in food imports and increase in food quality.
To get iron and oil, groups to the west can invest in research to try to obtain these resources on the spot or even import, since the situation of these groups is better than that of the capital.
With the two groups of oligarchies that control manufacturing and fishing in the west getting stronger, and the oligarchy in power weakened, resistance is to be expected, but food and cultivation has always been the domain of this oligarchy.

Week 4 - Energy Policy

Salino, despite having old nuclear power plants, which he intends to renovate, has an agreement to acquire more energy with Tabaria. This alliance grants the country +9 Gigawatts from wind sources.

The other sources of energys is the geothermal and the natural gas burning. But we are investing to stop using the natural gas burning, with the opbject top reduce CO2 emissions.
