AVID WASC Summary 2018
The Achievement Via Individual Determination program has been in place at Steele Canyon High School since inception. Academic success is facilitated by the AVID program’s mission which is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance and to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is assisting 222 students, representing 10% of the student population with college readiness skills. Since the start of the program, 100% of AVID students graduated on time, took the SAT and/or ACT exam, and completed courses allowing them to meet four-year college entrance requirements. In addition, 100% of the seniors applied to 4-year colleges and between 95-100% were accepted. Most recently in 2016, of the 100% planning to attend college, 70% planned to attend a four-year college and 30% a two-year college.
The site Principal and Assistant Principal along with 4 teachers received training at the AVID Summer Institute in 2016-17 bringing the AVID professional learning up to 54.4% of teachers, administrators, and counselors who have been AVID trained. The AVID site coordinator, 13 students, and four tutors were AVID Summer Institute presenters.
Since 2014, the enrollment of AVID elective students has steadily increased from 156 to 222 students increasing the percentage of students enrolled in AVID elective up to 10%. The program has continued to grow to a total of 7 AVID Elective Sections which are currently offered and include the following courses: AVID, AVID Junior Seminar, and AVID Senior Seminar. Each section has an average of 32 students where the students are actively involved in promoting college attendance. Former AVID students often return to SCHS as AVID tutors and represent their colleges through giving college presentations. In addition, the AVID program at SCHS has been recognized as an “AVID Highly Certified Site” in the 2016-2017 school year and prior years as well.
In summary, the AVID program supports a higher number of students eligible for national school lunch program than our school’s average. AVID also, has a higher percentage of AVID elective Hispanic or Latino, Black or African American, and American Indian or Alaska Native students than our school’s enrollment average. On the 2016-17 Smarter Balance, our performance summary again showed the AVID program is successfully meeting the needs of the underrepresented college going population. The SBAC test results showed 89% of all AVID students tested to have met the achievement standard for ELA, and 54% of all AVID students tested to have met the achievement standard for Math. The success of the program is shown not only through our test results, but through the success of AVID students completing the requirements needed to allow admittance into a four-year university.
