George B. Cortelyou was the ultimate "right-hand man" in Theodore Roosevelt’s administration, famously becoming the first person to hold three different Cabinet positions:
Secretary of Commerce and Labor, Postmaster General, and Secretary of the Treasury.
He was a master of organization and crisis management, traits that were put to the ultimate test during one of the most chaotic moments in American history.
On September 6, 1901, Cortelyou was standing right next to President William McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition when the President was shot by an assassin. In the immediate panic, Cortelyou was the one who caught the falling President, directed the secret service, and took charge of the emergency medical response.
