The Skill: Identifying who created a document, when it was created, and where it came from.
Look for the small text at the bottom or back of the image.
What to write: "The Bloody Massacre in King Street, March 5th, 1770, Boston."
What to write: "The Destruction of Tea in Boston Harbor, 1773."
The Skill: Differentiating between a fact (what is actually there) and an inference (what you think it means).
Imagine you are describing the picture to someone over the phone who can't see it.
What to write: "7 men in red coats holding long guns with knives on the end."
What to write: "A man lying on the ground with red stains on his shirt."
What to write: "Dark blue water with brown boxes floating in it."
What to write: "A big moon in the top right corner."
The Skill: Inferring Perspective. They are looking at symbols (the dog, the moon, the red stains) to figure out the creator’s Point of View (POV).
Look at the facts and take a guess at the "story."
What to write: "The red stains represent blood; the artist wants us to feel bad for the colonists."
What to write: "The men in red coats look organized, like they are following a mean leader."
What to write: "They are throwing the tea because they are protesting a law they hate."
What to write: "The dog in the front looks calm, which is weird because everyone else is screaming."
Historical Inquiry.
The Skill: Using evidence to support an argument and acknowledging different viewpoints (like the "protest" vs. "riot" debate).
Talk back to the people who wrote before you.
What to write: "I agree with Group 2, those guns look terrifying."
What to write: "Wait, Group 3 said it's a 'protest,' but it looks more like a riot to me!"
What to write: "I think the artist is biased because the British soldiers look like monsters."
What to write: "Check out the guy in the window! Why is he just watching?"
"You can't just say something is happening; you have to say why."
Bad: "They are angry."
Good: "They look angry because their fists are clenched and their faces are red."
