Students will understand how difficult life was for winter soldiers at Valley Forge by comparing their survival gear to the clothing and technology we use today.
How would my life change if I had to survive winter without modern clothing or technology?
How does technology shape the way people survive and live in different time periods?
Musket – A heavy gun used by soldiers during the American Revolution.
Breeches – Thin pants worn by soldiers that did not keep them warm.
Survival – The ability to stay alive in difficult conditions.
Technology – Tools and inventions that help people solve problems and make life easier.
1. The Battered Tricorn Hat
Often lost its shape due to constant rain and snow. It offered little protection against the freezing wind.
2. The Hunting Shirt
Many soldiers didn't have real uniform coats. They wore loose linen shirts (like this one) that were cheap to make but offered almost NO warmth in zero-degree weather.
3. The Empty Haversack
This canvas bag carried their food. At Valley Forge, it was often empty or contained only "fire cake" (a mixture of flour and water).
4. The Musket
Weighing about 10 pounds. Soldiers had to keep the metal dry, or it would rust, and the gunpowder would become useless.
5. Linen Breeches
Pants made of thin linen fabric. Imagine wearing thin summer pajamas in the snow—that is what they were wearing.
6. Footwear
The most shocking part. Thousands of soldiers had no boots. They wrapped their feet in old shirts, blankets, or raw hide to protect them from the snow, leaving bloody footprints behind.

Directions: Use your memory and observation skills to fill in the inventory list.
The Modern Winter Arsenal (The Reality of Today) Now, mentally scan your own closet, look at how people around you are dressed, and think about how we travel during a modern winter blizzard.
Look at the incredible amount of technology we use just to stay warm for the few minutes we are outside!
Your Mission: Brainstorm a list of the modern "survival gear" we take for granted today. Be specific!
Name brands (like Nike, North Face) or specific types of items (like "heated seats").
INVENTORY LIST: 21st Century Winter Survival
Category 1: Clothing & Gear Technology (List at least 5 items you or people you know wear to stay warm. Think from head to toe.) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Category 2: Transportation Technology (List at least 2 warm ways we get around during winter instead of walking in the snow.) 1. 2.
Category 3: Hot Fuel (Food & Drink) (List at least 3 hot foods or drinks you can easily get on a cold day) 1. 2. 3.
Journal Prompt:
In Google Classroom, open the question titled “Snow Day 2026”
and complete the journal response.
My Perfect Day in 2044
Imagine you just woke up 20 years in the future.
The world has changed completely. Describe your ideal fun day in this new world.
Part I: Explain what you will wear for this extremely cold day!
The Gear (High-Tech Fashion):
What are you wearing? Think beyond just style—think about function.
Examples: Do your shoes have anti-gravity boosters? Is your shirt made of "smart fabric" that heats up when it’s cold? Are you wearing contact lenses that let you browse the internet with your eyes.
Part II: Where are you going or what are you doing?
The Action (Future Fun):
What do teenagers do for fun in 2044? How do they get around?
Examples: Are you hoverboarding to the mall? Playing a video game where you physically enter the game world (VR)? Taking a hyper-loop train to Tokyo just for the afternoon? Attending a concert performed by holograms?
Part III: What or where will you go eat?
The Food (Future Eats):
What does lunch look like? How is it made?
Examples: Did a 3D printer create your burger in 10 seconds? Are you drinking a "smart soda" that changes flavor while you drink it? Are you eating at a restaurant floating in the clouds?
Your Mission: describing your day using these three categories.
Be as creative and detailed as possible!
