Reading and Comprehension Questions
In the 1500s to 1800s, Europe, Africa, and the Americas were part of a trading system called the Triangular Trade.Β
It was called this because the trade routes formed a triangle across the Atlantic Ocean.
Europeans started the system by bringing goods like guns, cloth, and rum to Africa. In return, they bought enslaved people. These Africans were captured or sold and forced to leave their homes.
The journey from Africa to the Americas was called the Middle Passage. It was one of the most terrible parts of the slave trade.
Β Enslaved people were packed tightly into ships with little space, food, or air. Many got sick and died before even reaching land. The trip could take weeks or months, and conditions were cruel and inhumane.
Once the ships reached the Americas, the enslaved people were sold to work on plantations, where they grew crops like sugar, cotton, and tobacco.Β
These goods were then shipped to Europe, where the cycle would begin again.
The African Slave Trade and the Middle Passage caused millions of deaths and left lasting pain for African people and their descendants.Β
It is remembered today as one of the darkest parts of history.
