The TAPCO visual art program is a sequential program where students take ten art credits and can earn a Chancellor's Enforcement in the Arts on their high school diplomas. We prepare students for this by teaching painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, digital art and mixed-media. We enable artistic exploration, teach critical writing skills, and hone in technical mastery in a rigorous and inclusive learning environment, with high-end art materials. In addition, we offer trips to art museums, interdisciplinary collaborations, and opportunities to show art in and outside the school. We aim to shape confident, creative, and skillful graduates, ready for higher education.
I am Hagar Sadan, the Studio Arts teacher at TAPCo. I strive to create a supportive and rigorous learning environment that allows every student to find their artistic voice.Β I practice culturally responsive education, while considering my studentsβ interests, preferences, and social-emotional well-being. I see my students as the artists of both present and future, and I want to help them develop the skills, confidence and perseverance to communicate their chosen meaning through art. In order to do so, I believe in bringing real art world experiences and opportunities into the classroom. Additionally, I teach the critical thinking and writing skills students need to communicate about art in school and in their future professional lives.
This is my second year teaching at TAPCo, and my 12th year teaching in NYC public schools. I have a B.A. in Visual Art from Rutgers University, an M.S. in Urban Education from Mercy College, and I undertook Doctoral Studies in Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University (ABD). As a practicing artist, my works traverse the boundaries of traditional media, combining drawing, painting and mixed-media. I exhibit my artwork in galleries and art spaces in NYC and the Hudson Valley.
