The Dance Department at TAPCO focuses on the embodiment and artistic expression of all of our students. We believe that the study of dance and the study of art is the study of oneself. Our mission is to help our students grow confidently in their own bodies and voice so they can better understand and serve the world and community around them, is one of the many things that make TAPCo unique.
Through the study of Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz movement our students learn kinesthetic awareness that helps them have a deeper learning of their bodies and the space around them. We foster the growth of our students' artistic voice by supporting them in their choreographic pursuits. They also have the opportunity to take Dance Film as an additional dance elective, where students create movement-based, story-driven films in front of and behind the camera. Our students earn a Chancellor's Endorsed Diploma after their four years at TAPCo. During their time at TAPCo our students complete at least 10 credits in Dance.
Offered to Dance majors and Arts majors across all disciplines, Dance Film students participate in creating movement-based, story-driven short films together. Students will learn how to dance and choreograph in front of the camera, and how to work as a production team behind the camera across all phases of filmmaking– pre-production, production, principal photography, and post-production. Throughout the course, students will develop original concepts, choose locations, create shot lists, sketch storyboards, and utilize industry-standard camera techniques to shape their story. Completed works will be screened at the annual TAPCo Film Festival and are eligible for submission to the NYC Public School Film Festival.
Grace Deane is a dancer, artist and teacher based in New York City. She grew up in New Rochelle, New York, surrounded by a family of dancers. At UW-Madison, Grace had many wonderful opportunities to work with faculty and guest artists such as Bill T Jones, Pamela Petrio, Joe Goode, and Danielle Russo. For Grace, the need to communicate through art led her to dance. After graduating in 2015 with a BS in Dance and a double major in Math, Grace completed her Pilates certification from Movement Insights Pilates under Collette Stewart. She then returned to New York where she has been living, teaching, and choreographing since 2016.
Prior to coming to TAPCo, she has choreographed four musicals at New Rochelle High School. Grace was thrilled to be a part of the 2018 summer Devices workshop. Her solo work ‘nayeh’ which uses original song, text and movement. Since returning to the east coast Grace has been shown professional work New York City and across America. Grace is an AGDEP scholar who holds a Masters of Art in Dance Education from Hunter College.
