The Career Navigation Roadmap is a comprehensive tool designed to guide students through their educational journey and prepare them for a choice-filled, economically secure future. Focused currently on the high school experience—with plans to expand into middle school—the Roadmap helps students explore college and career options and make informed decisions.
It draws from student-centered developmental frameworks such as CareerReadyNYC, the CTE Work-Based Learning continuum, and the NYCPS Match framework, and will continue to evolve through input from educators, students, families, and partners.
Organized around four key phases—Examine, Explore, Engage, and Experience—the Roadmap supports students in building real skills, developing strong plans, and gaining a head start on college and career. Milestones and activities are aligned to developmental grade bands but are flexible and adaptable to local school contexts, allowing schools to tailor the experience to meet their students’ needs.
One of the goals of the Office of Student Pathways is to develop skills among students to help themselves on their journey towards post-secondary readiness. Asheanna Suresh, a student-apprentice working with the Office of Student Pathways, has created a student and family-facing checklist to provide an accessible, actionable, and relevant way to engage with the Career Navigation Roadmap. As a graduate of NYC Public Schools, Asheanna recognizes how valuable such a checklist would have been for students and families in advocating for individual interests throughout the career navigation process.
